Edie Yvonne – On Your Mind (2023)

By the age of 13, singer-songwriter Edie Yvonne was performing in productions like Xanadu, Cats and Chorus Line with the Youth Academy of Dramatic Arts. At age 13, she wrote her first album At Ease, and on her 14th birthday, she released her first single based on a short film she had made. Over the past six months, she has released six singles exploring the trials, tribulations and emotional fragility of a teenager growing up in an uncertain society. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘On Your Mind’.

Following her track ‘In The Rain’, Edie Yvonne shifts to a more upbeat folk-tinged pop sound in the new song. Penned and recorded in collaboration with producers Nicky Swedin, Cormac Liotta and Rrose Productions, ‘On Your Mind’ has a sophisticated arrangement weaving together drums, electric guitars and Yvonne’s obscure vocals into a moving sonic tapestry. Yet, despite the sophisticated production, a layer of vulnerability can be heard and felt giving it a rugged rawness.

While ‘On Your Mind’ has a choppier beat as compared to ‘In The Rain’, a similar sense of soothing and sincerity flows through the melody. The mellifluous shimmering of hope and optimism is distorted slightly by a raw discomfort capturing the pure emotion of the theme. A sonic representation of frustration felt when trying and failing to communicate with another person, ‘On Your Mind’ has a jarring quality, particularly with the abrupt end, but still retains hopefulness of understanding.

“I wrote ‘On Your Mind’ after feeling like I couldn’t get through to a loved one. I was questioning how to be close with someone and feel so far away, so disconnected.” – Edie Yvonne on ‘On Your Mind’.
