Bad Ass Beauty – TypeCast (2023)

When we last heard Bad Ass Beauty, she was giving us a moment to let all the stressors in life fly by. In ‘Blast Off’, the US-based musician pushes us to “let your hair down, let your ass hang all the way out, relax, live your life and let all the problems go for the moment…” In her latest single ‘TypeCast’, LaQuinta Prince (performing under the moniker Bad Ass Beauty) picks up the pace becoming introspective and vulnerable with a fierce flair.

Encapsulating the core of female empowerment, Prince’s songs represent the boldness of a self-assured woman living in a world of discrimination. Her hard rock style reminds me of female powerhouses Cristina Scabbia and Lzzy Hale; however, the sassy soul brings a hint of Sade’s sensuality to the mix. The thing is, while I can compare Prince to these iconic artists, she oozes a badass beauty of her own that is completely inimitable.

Not as high-paced as the preceding ‘Blast Off’, Prince leans toward melodic metal with the single ‘TypeCast’. Pounding drums rattle beneath powerful guitars hitting you in the face with a forceful blast of sound. A rollercoaster of instrumentation, the melody is relentless in its assault on your senses (not a bad one, mind you). The rollercoaster ride from mellifluous soothing to heart-stopping heaviness is exquisite, particularly the astounding lead guitar solo tossing you sideways midway through the track.

While the melody intoxicates you, it is Prince’s soulful vocals that add a scorching rawness to ‘TypeCast’. Filled with an optimistic belief in your awesomeness as a strong individual, she stamps her signature “you’re freaking amazing and don’t you forget it” attitude on our hearts. Yet, despite the self-assuredness, vulnerability and confusion lie beneath the theme of being attracted to someone who is completely not your type. It begs the question if we should keep to “our type” or try something different.

“You ever find yourself wildly feeling someone you normally wouldn’t give the time of day to? Go ahead and say it: they are out of YOUR league for whatever reason. Love and think highly of yourself. Then here comes this one who you never thought… you’re just eerily drawn to this person, could this be? Let me keep it to myself until I figure this shit out… then again, maybe it’s time for a major shake-up.” – LaQuinta Prince on ‘TypeCast’

Always outstanding with her magical musical masterpieces, Bad Ass Beauty hits it out of the park with this raw, brutally honest and introspective single.
