Pheelynx – Can’t Get Away (2023)

Daring, unapologetic, fierce and captivating – these are only a few words to describe the insatiable musical force that is Pheelynx. Based in Los Angeles, this American singer-songwriter uses dark, complex melodies to bring light to uncomfortable truths in society. With only two singles under her belt, Pheelynx might be considered a newbie in the music world; however, she is hardly someone to overlook. Her originality, authenticity and versatility make her a shining gem in a pool of pebbles. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Can’t Get Away’.

Following her well-received debut single ‘Emotions’, Pheelynx shifts gear in ‘Can’t Get Away’. Instead of ambient dream-pop sounds, she drives a bold line between old-school pop-rock and pop-punk. Almost instantaneously, a bold bass sets the beat for this powerful single. Pounding drums emerge from one side making you pay attention to their forcefulness but it is the crescendo of crashing guitar that gives you that gut-wrenching sensation. Tossing you into a sonic whirlwind, you are pushed from pillar to post in a hurricane of kaleidoscopic wind.

While ‘Can’t Get Away’ has a hard-hitting melody leaving you agape with music surrounding your pounding heart, the powerful lyricism brings complexity to the single. Touching on the provocative issue of sexual abuse and the associated emotional consequences, ‘Can’t Get Away’ might cause some discomfort but this is what ‘Can’t Get Away’ is all about. When speaking about ‘Can’t Get Away’, Pheelynx explains: “The song is to my family after coming out of denial that my father raped me as a child.”

Filled with rage, angst and scorching aggression to make herself heard, Pheelynx hits you between the eyes with her powerful vocals. Interestingly, just as there is force in the sonic slap, there is also warmth in her voice. Warm, rich and tender – in a sort of aggressive way – ‘Can’t Get Away’ is a sophisticated pop-punk anthem for victims who have found justice, as well as healing those who may never see justice.
