Bineal Roy – Olden Eyes (ft. Munia) (2023)

Oozing natural musical talent, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Bineal Roy is not one to be ignored. One-third of the popular Australian group Adaptors, Roy is eager to experiment with genres just as the other bandmates are. Adaptors are not to be pigeonholed as they traipse various genres like blues, funk, post-punk and even trip-hop, and we can expect this from Roy’s solo project. This is my introduction to the genre-diverse artist as a solo artist and Adaptors, but Bineal Roy is already turning heads across the globe. Despite only launching a solo project in 2022, he is receiving coverage from international blogs like Sinusoidal Music, Thoughts Words Actions, Roadie Music, Amnplify, and many more. Come with us as we delve into Bineal Roy’s magical world of music.

Following his critically acclaimed debut single ‘Maybe’, Bineal Roy changes direction with the sophomore track ‘Olden Eyes’. Unlike ‘Maybe’ which is an RnB track with hints of pop, ‘Olden Eyes’ leans toward a folk style. Bringing a vintage folk tone, he finds a line between Simon & Garfunkel and James Taylor; however, a contemporary flair exists in its richness giving the song an indie-folk edge.

Rich, warm and bold, Bineal Roy’s vocals seem to wrap you in a tender embrace while the instrumentation swarms about you with charming elegance. Interestingly, while the track is sophisticated in its production, rawness exists in the arrangement. Roy seems to capture the intimacy of a live session exquisitely transferring it to the acoustic in-studio production. Of course, we cannot forget Munia’s soothing vocals bringing a female freshness to ‘Olden Eyes’.

Just as the melody invokes feelings of hushed vulnerability and soothing soulfulness, the poetic lyricism is as significant. Bineal Roy explains, “‘Olden Eyes’ is based on the idea that throughout different lifetimes we meet the same people and although they are in different bodies, their eyes remain the same which is how we can recognise them.”

In addition to the single, Bineal Roy released an official music video for ‘Olden Eyes’. The video can be viewed on his YouTube channel. Please note: this music video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.
