Track of the Day: Proxoxie – No Sleep (2023)

Everyone is unique in their own way but, for me, singer-songwriter Proxoxie is especially original. Along with her status as a musician, the US-based artist is a blogger, fan fiction writer, radio show host, and taxidermy collector (yep, that one caught me off guard as well). With her diverse interests, likeable personality and intriguing sound, Proxoxie is not one to ignore.

Beginning in the underground Detroit scene before heading to Chicago, this emerging artist brought a punch with her hyperpop meets scenewave music. This is my introduction to Proxoxie, but she is already turning heads with features on Lost In The Manor, Karl Is My Unkle, RGM, Fame Magazine and more. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘No Sleep’.

Following her well-received track ‘Irrelevant’, ‘No Sleep’ is a blast of electropop with bold beats and eclectic synths throughout the track. Unlike ‘Irrelevant’, the new single has a more subdued tone with a hushed wistfulness lurking in the arrangement. Typically electronic pop in every way, ‘No Sleep’ can easily find its way to the clubs and I can feel the underground scene rawness coming through.

Setting you off on a kaleidoscopic sonic river, Proxoxie finds the line between smooth sailing and tumultuous waves in ‘No Sleep’. Her sweet vocals bring an almost innocence to the bold melody. What I find intriguing, is how the bouncy joviality of the melody juxtaposes the theme of anxiety and inner turmoil. Proxoxie explains:

“I wrote the song in September 2022 after a random vocal melody popped into my head and I started writing gibberish and produced an instrumental around it… The song is about intense feelings of anticipation or anxiety when all you want to do is shut off your brain and sleep…” – Proxoxie on ‘No Sleep’.

Reflective, emotive and chaotic, ‘No Sleep’ crawls into your head, rattles about your cranium and leaves you gasping for breath.
