Greg Bounce – Brain Movies (2023)

Do you find yourself staring at the ceiling at night imagining scenes of things that can go wrong? Singer-songwriter Greg Bounce calls these thoughts “brain movies”. Currently residing in Portugal, the UK native Greg Bounce has been sharing a masterful brand of electronica at a nonstop pace. Already a regular on The Other Side Reviews, Bounce turned our heads in 2021 with ‘Fear That Love’ and continues to captivate us. We are not the only ones whose heads have been turned. Featured on blogs such as Less Than 1000 Followers, Rising Artists Blog, Muse Chronicle, Mystic Sons and It’s All Indie, Bounce is reaching audiences across the globe. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Brain Movies’.
Taken from his upcoming debut Brain Movies, the title track follows his well-received single ‘Find A Love’. As with his previous material, ‘Brain Movies’ is complex, profound and intricate both melodically and lyrically. In this song, Bounce explores modern society and how non-stop information streams into our lives as constantly dehumanising social media and ubiquitous technology. He explains, “Packing our minds so full of endless podcasts, series and tweets means that we become strangers in our own heads. I wrote ‘Brain Movies’ to capture the digital chaos of making your brain a hard drive and how it gets in the way of us truly knowing ourselves.”
Rejoined by producer Samuel James and talented artists Brendan Williams (guitar), Robin Richards (bass), Andrew Richardson (drums) and Liviu Gheorghe (pianist), ‘Brain Movies’ was produced at Manchester’s Low Four Studios. The upbeat, fun, lively melody blends the dynamic guitars, bold bass, and pounding drums with powerful electronic beats. For me, however, it is Gheorghe’s interspersed piano layered atop the electropop melody that adds eclecticism to ‘Brain Movies’.
One aspect I find particularly intriguing is how the layered and textured effect of the melody mimics our digital society. Moreover, the rollercoaster of electronica seems to have you in an online pool of chaos losing yourself entirely. Overall, it’s a brilliant encapsulation of the madness, frustration, fear and complete confusion of reality.
