silktape – Jaded (2023)

With only three singles to their name and formed just over a year ago, Brighton band silktape can be considered a shining new addition to the UK rock scene. Using their brash, forceful and enticing music, the lads are standing out amidst the rest in their home town and beyond. A reputation for energetic, intoxicating shows, their confident stage presence is garnering a loyal fanbase; however, it is not only their performances that turn heads. Features on CLOUT, FV Music Blog and TJPL News have the blogosphere abuzz with silktape on their mind.

Following their award-winning debut single ‘Stride’ and sophomore track ‘Sink Or Swim’, silktape hits us once again with ‘Jaded’. Selling out headline shows at venues like Brighton’s Green Door Store, as well as supporting acts like Dutch Criminal Record, silktape packs a punch in their high-powered performances but the lads enjoy more than rambunctious revelling with audiences. Alongside the melodic insanity is the profound reflection on humanity. In the case of ‘Jaded’ silktape touches on disillusionment, exasperation and being, well, jaded.

“I wanted to write a track that spoke to the frustration and disillusionment many people, including myself, are experiencing right now. ‘Jaded’ is a call to arms to anyone who feels like they’re not being listened to or understood… It’s about taking a stand and refusing to be silent anymore.” – George Clark (frontman of silktape) on ‘Jaded’.

Mixed by Jake Rousham (Royal Blood, Nick Cave) and mastered by Pete Maher (Jack White, Pixies, The 1975), ‘Jaded’ is a bold blend of alternative rock and emo-rock with nostalgic tinges of post-punk sprinkled into the pot. Alex Mold’s pounding drums match Callum Greig’s heavy bass as Jake Marvin’s scorching lead guitar adds a thrilling ferocity to the single. Interestingly, while the instrumentation has an insanity to it, the melody retains a mellifluous harmony in its frenzy.

Along with Marvin, Mold and Greig, George Clark’s vocals make a strong impression. Capturing the core of ‘Jaded’, Clark’s vocals traipse along the moving melody bringing a theatrical flair to the single. Jovial and bright, a toe-tapping vibe slivers through the upbeat tune. The thing is, just as the track has a bounce it is this bounce that encapsulates frustration, fury, anger and rage.

I once compared silktape to My Chemical Romance with a way of rattling about your brain. ‘Jaded’ proves this comparison correct in its dramatic theatrics to calm the furious soul. In all honesty, I think Gerard Way should give the up-and-coming silktape a listen. I’m certain silktape will enchant him just as they enchant all of us.
