Jammy – Sing (2023)

The artist’s name (Jammy) and the name of his single (‘Sing’) might sound deceptively simple. Yet, there is nothing either simple about this singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Cardiff nor about this snappy, quite melodic song.  Of course, there are quite a few influences you can hear within this pop-rock ditty, and that revolves around the artists who favour not-so-simple melodic rock like Nik Kershaw, Tom Petty, or John Mayer laced in that 80’s pop-rock veneer. Add to that some intricate electric guitar work from Jammy and you get quite a potential radio or playlist hit.

What some listeners often overlook with pop-rock itself is the fact that it is quite hard to achieve a balance between those formula elements that make such a song listenable and how hard it is to present such elements successfully, but also with imagination and a personal touch. Jammy quite successfully achieve that balance here. With ‘Sing,’ it is that great melodic hook that neatly ties all the elements of this song together.

Actually, ‘Sing’ is the first of three singles that are supposed to present Jammy’s upcoming (second) album. At the same time, Jammy has also produced a full-length album for BBC Radio Wales A-Lister Kaysha Louvain. If we are to judge by ‘Sing,’ Jammy’s upcoming album he is still working on will be quite a joy for the lovers of that melodic pop-rock sound.
