Izzy Pingrey – narcissus (2023)

From Find No Enemy to York Calling, Existential Magazine, East Portland Blog and The Music Asylum, US-based Izzy Pingrey has been turning heads on an international scale. Barely out of adolescence, the 17-year-old singer-songwriter has been writing songs since the age of 13 and producing them when she was 15. Now, with the help of her father, Pingrey is reaching out to listeners with her intriguing melodies. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘narcissus’.

With only three tracks under her belt (one of them being an instrumental version of her debut song ‘sick of it’), Izzy Pingrey is relatively new to listeners but is by no means mundane. Traversing genres like pop-punk, pop-rock and indie-rock with ease, Pingrey showcases innovation as an artist. Following her single ‘sick of it’, sophomore track ‘narcissus’ sees a shift from ferocity to subdued…all with a haunting passion, of course. Unlike her well-received debut track presenting a rough, powerful, pumping Paramore visage with vocals reminiscent of Hayley Williams, ‘narcissus’ looks at raw innocence within a softer ballad. Intertwining wisps of folk through the pop ballad, there is a whimsical, wistful flair hovering in melody.

Inspired by youthful friendships, relationships, love and loss, Izzy Pingrey explores the challenges of being young. When it comes to ‘narcissus’, she draws on personal experiences resonating with audiences on an intimate, more profound level. She explains:

“I wrote ‘narcissus’ after dealing with some friendship troubles. I felt so overlooked like I was just pouring my heart and soul into multiple relationships that didn’t reciprocate the love and care that I was giving. I’ve been interested in Greek mythology since I was a kid and while I was ranting about some teenage drama, I forgot to pronounce the letter T in narcissist…the rest just flowed out of me…”

Sincere, tender, and heartfelt but with brutal honesty and pain fluttering beneath the haunting piano, ‘narcissus’ can easily hypnotise listeners. I look forward to more from this gem of an artist.
