Garland Kelley – Give It All Away (2023)

The adopted son of Queens of the Stone Age and Guns N’ Roses, singer-songwriter Garland Kelley has a devotion to classic rock and hard rock sounds. A taste of vintage rock is heard in his melodies, but an obscure edginess and power of modern-day alternative rock make Kelley’s music diverse, unique and a fusion that is rather indescribable. A veteran musician, the US-based artist has a reputation for energetic, engaging songs and performances; however, his more recent releases see him taking a stand as a phenomenal force in today’s scene. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Give It All Away’.

Known for his exploration of existential issues through music, Garland Kelley’s lyricism is poignant, thought-provoking and personal. As with previous singles ‘The Higher Road’, ‘A Mind of Your Own’ and ‘The Point Of No Return’, Kelley once again touches on profound themes in ‘Give It All Away’ – in this case, addressing materialism and overconsumption. Using a conversational tone, but with an intimate narrative belying the message, Kelley hits you between the eyes as he elegantly explores the evils of materialism and how to hopefully overcome the situation by “giving it all away”.

Wrapping a sensitive message in a hard rock wrapper, ‘Give It All Away’ has a pounding energy tossing you from pillar to post while still cradling you in a warm embrace. The rich vocals navigate you through the chaotic swirl of music presenting a type of anchor in the song. Interestingly, while a strong rock vibe oozes from ‘Give It All Away’, movements to folk, pop and even an ending reggae bounce add that eclectic flair to the tune.

Sincere, introspective and sentimental, Garland Kelley captures our hearts with his raw but sophisticated song ‘Give It All Away’.
