A Chat with Sonictron (07.06.23)
Brooding, haunting and filled with a dark intensity but boasting fierce empowerment to live your life and achieve your dreams. We speak to artists Skylah and Mason from Sonictron about their new EP, Original Sin, what music means to them, and any future plans.
OSR: What drew you to music? How did Sonictron form?
Sonictron: We had been working together as singers and songwriters for years already. We sang in the same band since 2017 and were always very close. During the pandemic, we had the idea to form a duo band and started songwriting over video calls, which was very interesting. Having started this project during the pandemic allowed us to focus on our drive in a time where everything was in a turmoil.
OSR: What does music mean to you?
Sonictron: Music has always been a big passion for both of us since we were kids. Singing and coming up with new songs, new lyrics, and new concepts has always been our first choice, individually and as a team. We are the happiest and most inspired when writing and performing on stage.
Mason’s journey started at the age of 3 when his grandmother took him to his first-ever concert and she realised that this was going to be his path. Skylah on the other hand grew up always singing Disney songs to herself over and over again. She did this more than she talked and it was always clear that this was going to be her vocation.
OSR: What can you tell us about your EP Original Sin?
Sonictron: Original Sin is about embracing who you are and being in touch with your dark side. Life is all about balance and we feel comfortable where others feel uncomfortable. Take a wrong step and you won’t regret it.
OSR: What do you hope people take from Original Sin and your music in general?
Sonictron: We hope Original Sin empowers people to first of all explore their deepest desires and not be afraid to speak their truths. Give in to your temptations, we all know everyone has a facade they keep up, but behind closed doors, they drop the mask. This EP is the epitome of internal and social freedom, living life on your own terms.
OSR: What do you take from Original Sin?
Sonictron: We are drawn to dark pop music and Original Sin was the perfect platform to explore our sound and be authentic. We both identify ourselves with the music we make.
OSR: If you could change one thing about the EP, what would you change?
Sonictron: Nothing, it’s the journey that matters and we are happy with what we had to share.
OSR: What makes Sonictron unique?
Sonictron: Our sound is very hybrid, it’s a combination of dark pop, and cinematic with trailer elements. Our sound is inspired by acts such as BANKS, Neoni and Labrinth. We don’t shy away from the conventional electro sound.
OSR: If a listener were coming across your music for the first time, which song would you recommend?
Sonictron: We would recommend ‘Purge’ as a first listen as it embodies our unique style and personality. ‘Purge’ is about the end of all civilisation as we know it and the start of a new world order. It has dystopian elements and welcomes a new listener into our world.
OSR: If you could listen to one musician for the rest of your life, who would it be and why?
Sonictron: Mason Blu would choose Max Martin and Skylah would choose the Belgian artist Stromae.
OSR: Do you have future plans as Sonictron?
Sonictron: We have big plans for Sonictron, currently we are in Cannes, France for a music conference we will be performing at. This is the start of many more international performances. We also have all our music represented by various Sync Agencies and our dream is to see a song of ours on a trailer.
OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?
Sonictron: Don’t be afraid to tell others who you really are. Whoever is not interested in joining your journey is not worth your while.
