Lewis Knaggs – Third Eye (2023)

Raised in England by a Welsh mother and American father, it’s needless to say Lewis Knaggs’s upbringing is eclectic. Exposed to a plethora of diverse influences, the singer-songwriter captures his observations, emotions and thoughts in personal, intimate musical tales; and people are paying attention. From IGGY Magazine to Clout, It’s All Indie, Pop Passion Blog, Mystic Sons and Bored City, Lewis Knaggs is turning heads on an international scale. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Third Eye’.

Following his single ‘My Father’ – a dedication to his father who passed away in 2022 – ‘Third Eye’ is an intimate reflection of life, love and the passage of time. He explains that ‘Third Eye’ is “about trying to hold onto the memories, advice and words of wisdom given to me over the years as I progress through life, whether that may be words shared with my by close friends and family or from loved ones that have passed…” As with ‘My Father’ and ‘Feel Forever’, the poetic lyricism of ‘Third Eye’ captures human fragility in an intricate sonic wrapper but it is simultaneously an empowering, optimistic and insightfully honest tale.

In an interview with Bored City, Knaggs notes that one of his greatest musical influences is the Red Hot Chili Peppers and this is clearly evident in ‘Third Eye’. While the tenderness of folk slips into the melody, the single adopts a more rock-inclined tone from beginning to end. Powerful guitars meld with pounding drums in a 90s rock sound presenting something toe-tapping but also heart-pumping. The warm vocals enhance a mellifluous side to the single; however, a Springsteen gruffness tinges the mellow flow with a gritty slant.

Sincere and sophisticated, the arrangement has a shimmering elegance in its production. Then again, while delicacy and charm exist in ‘Third Eye’, a raw vulnerability breaks through giving it a brash innocence that is entirely unforgettable.
