Snakedoctors (ft. Nik Hughes) – Why Don’t (2023)

Poland-based group Snakedoctors “make music because it is fun” and their critically acclaimed melodies prove how entertaining they can be. Engaging, witty, energetic and, well, fun, the foursome brings every flavour of rock to our ears. Formed in 2020, the long-time friends drew together their musical talent and have built a loyal following across the globe. With numerous chart-topping singles, such as ‘Close That Door’, ‘Destroyed’, ‘Friday Night’ and ‘Tinder Girl’, Snakedoctors prove they are not to be ignored. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Why Don’t’.

Taken from their most recent album, Waiting, ‘Why Don’t’ has strong leanings toward old-school grunge. Unlike their previous single ‘Brighter’, ‘Why Don’t’ is darker, murkier and brings a harsh grittiness to our ears. Interestingly enough, while the pounding drums and dynamic guitars create a sense of palpable grittiness, there is a harmonic and soothing sensation within the song. What I mean is, while the hard-hitting instrumentation is prominent, a listlessness and wistfulness sliver through the murky undergrowth.

Recorded with Dawid Gorgolewski (mixing) and Stephen Marcussen (mastering), ‘Why Don’t’ is another collaboration between Snakedoctors and Nik Hughes – the drummer of English rock band Bush. The sophisticated and elegant track ‘Why Don’t’ show the maturity of the band and producers; however, in true grunge style, there is a raw innocence and painfulness slathered atop the song.
