Neve Bowen – Haunting Sound of Love (2023)

Inspired by the likes of Kate Bush, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, and Florence + The Machine, singer-songwriter Neve Bowen dares to be different with her distinctive folk-pop sound. At only 19 years old, UK-based Bowen spent her formative teenage years in lockdown; however, while it is a poignant thing, it also brought about a torrent of inspiring tunes. Featured on Obscure Sound, Wolf In A Suit, Couch Mag, York Calling, Eat This Music and various playlists, she is already turning heads far beyond her UK borders even though she has only three songs beneath her belt. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Haunting Sound of Love’.

Using music as a form of therapy, Neve Bowen explores the more desperate, darker and profound sides of life. Touching on the fragility of humans growing up in uncertain societies, Bowen’s music looks at mental health challenges, loneliness, inner turmoil, body dysmorphia and a desperate feeling of vulnerability. Following her hit singles ‘Song For Anna’ and ‘Deep Blue Ocean’, ‘Haunting Sound of Love’ ponders the depths of abusive relationships and the distress felt by individuals in impossible situations.

“I wrote this reflecting back on some very dark times and to show solidarity with anyone else who finds themselves caught up and pinned down by a manipulative individual.” – Neve Bowen on ‘Haunting Sound of Love’

Unlike ‘Deep Blue Ocean’ and ‘Song For Anna’, ‘Haunting Sound of Love’ moves away from a synth-influenced pop sound to showcase Bowen’s acoustic skills. Using a simple guitar, Bowen brings tenderness to the minimalist melody showcasing the beauty of simplicity. Interestingly, while there is a heartfelt rawness to this bare-bones style, it is a kaleidoscopic melody.

One aspect I find intriguing about ‘Haunting Sound of Love’ is how the electronic pop vibes flutter through the stark single. Distorted vocals capture the haunting synth vibes while delicately traipsing along the guitar. It is slightly disconcerting and uncomfortable to listen to given the separation of acoustic and synthetic; however, it is also completely apt considering the darker theme of the lyrics. The ethereal vocal execution appears as a “voice inside your head” coming from a place of deep vulnerability and fear.

Elegant and sophisticated, Neve Bowen sends shivers down our spines with her intriguing single ‘Haunting Sound of Love’.
