Track of the Day: Love Ghost – Veneno (2023)

After facing numerous singles per day, things can often start melding into one another. Artists are amazing but there are so many it takes something really special to stand out. Love Ghost is that something special! Followed by The Other Side Reviews since 2021, we are aware of what the US-based lads sound like; however, each time I hit the play button on a Love Ghost song it feels as if I’m listening to their music for the first time…and I’m not the only one who feels this way. Featured on Rolling Stone, American Pancake, Substream Magazine, American Songwriter, Havoc Underground and Flaunt Magazine, the pop-punk/emo-rock foursome turn heads across the globe.

Hot on the heels of the well-received single ‘Jealousy’ which was tinged with slivers of My Chemical Romance and Linkin Park, ‘Veneno’ steps back to the Good Charlotte meets Weezer US pop-punk/pop-rock tones. Lighter and more upbeat, the melody combines pounding drums, dynamic guitars and gruff vocals in a gritty albeit soothing rock tune. Interestingly, while you can nod along to the arrangement, aggression lurks beneath as a nu-metal screaming lingers in the melody. It is this scream that tugs at the grittiness of the song with a “punch in the guts” chaser.

One aspect I love about Love Ghost is the vocal genius of Finnegan Bell – this does not mean Daniel Alcala (guitar), Cory Batchler (keyboard), or Daniel Gallardo (drums) are any less extraordinary. For me, however, it is Bell’s voice that adds something extra to the music. In ‘Veveno’, Bell soothes the savageness of the instrumentation carrying listeners in a mellifluous flow. It seems he hugs you and holds you tight while the pounding instruments whirl about in a kaleidoscopic force.

A collaborative project between Love Ghost and Mexico artist BInko, ‘Veveno’ finds a line between American pop-punk and Latin rock. The inclusion of Spanish lyrics brings a diversity to the track with an exotic flair.
