Oli Morris – Equilibrium (2023)
One of the most challenging aspects for any instrumental artist is to tell people a story without any words. I’m not speaking about the extended instrumental intro or outro to some rock song, but that pure, honest and tender sound that is completely non-verbal. So, what do you get when you come across this? It is either entirely cringe-worthy or the most soul-stirring melody you will ever encounter. Oli Morris is one of these enchanting storytellers. From his debut single ‘Bimal’ to ‘Flyer’ and the most recent release ‘Equilibrium’, Morris has been described as “…a master at work who obviously has perfect command of his instrument” (Berlin On Air), “…an incredible saxophonist” (Bristol 24/7), and “chilled mellow and got some serious soul” (A&R Factory).
Following the well-received track ‘Flyer’, ‘Equilibrium’ is Morris’ first release in 2023. Taken from his upcoming debut EP, A Brief Return To Solitude, ‘Equilibrium’ has Morris expressing the urge to “return to solitude” following his extensive touring schedules. It’s a chance for him to gather his thoughts, hone his music and enjoy that blissful sensation of music at its most honest. Incorporating “tape delays and metallic elements”, the song is fearless with a relentless sensation.
While ‘Flyer’ had a bold intrepid sensation reminding me of old-school funk sessions, ‘Equilibrium’ brings the tone down a couple of notches. Soft, soothing and tender, there is a mellifluous flow to the single. Morris’ saxophone brings an enchanting appeal with its soft, dulcet tones; however, it is not only the saxophone that ensnares our senses. A perfectly textured arrangement of drums, guitars, bass and keys join the saxophone finding the delicate balance between organic and electronic instrumentation.
Retaining a certain funk about the track, ‘Equilibrium’ could fall aside George Benson on his obscure guitar but there is a soft jazz slicing through the melody. Interestingly, while the song has a soothing quality, there is a haunting melancholy behind its inception. Borne as a tribute to confronting personal battles and mental health demons, Morris explains “I’m just writing music to understand myself better…The more I write, the more I craft my story”.
Charming and elegant but with a ruggedness lurking beneath the soulful sound, ‘Equilibrium’ is something completely inimitable. I have but one complaint: it ended too soon.
