Stuart Chaseman – Way Back Home (2023)

Combining the poetic intimacy of Bob Dylan with the gruff rock attitude of Bruce Springsteen, singer-songwriter Stuart Chaseman is charming, witty and filled with rock and roll intensity. Following over a decade away from the music industry, Chaseman re-emerges with hit singles ‘Sins’ and ‘Way Back Home’. Not only that, but he astounds audiences as one of the more popular personalities in the Netflix reality show Jewish Matchmaking (episode 7 if you’re interested). This step into the reality tv world coinciding with his return to the US music scene has him shining bright for audiences to see. Come with us as we take a gander at his most recent single ‘Way Back Home’.

On the heels of his comeback song ‘Sins’, Chaseman adopts a heavier, hard-hitting rock sound in ‘Way Back Home’. Retaining the vocal obscurity we learned to love in his 2009 album Next Exit…Brigadoon, Chaseman’s rich voice traipses an Americana melody in the new single. Slithering atop pounding drums and blues-inspired guitars, the well-textured arrangement oozes passionate grittiness. Interestingly, while a gruff rock and roll tone can be heard, it is also quite soothing in a grimy way.

One aspect of ‘Way Back Home’ that I find intriguing is how it encapsulates the theme of freedom and acceptance. Hindsight can be both wonderful and devastating, and Chaseman takes on each side in this reflective piece – particularly with relationships. Oddly enough, the reflection on past romances and mistakes made coincides with his appearance on Netflix’s Jewish Matchmaking. Evidence that we can heal, learn and move on.

“The song is about recovery and healing. Sometimes you don’t know how stupid and unhealthy your actions were until you get some distance. With that distance comes some perspective. The song is written from that place. The realisation that I’ve been doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results… Home is an internal place of balance. I’ve been out of whack for a while but now I know what I’ve been doing wrong and it’s time to move on.” – Stuart Chaseman on ‘Way Back Home’
