Inki – Destructive Interference (2023)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter and composer Ingibjörg Fridrinksdóttir, Inki is filled with eclecticism, electronica and utter obscurity. If you listen to her previous material, such as the 2022 EP Brotabrot, you might consider the tracks outlandish in their mind-blowing otherworldliness. Yet, instead of the typical ethereal ambience associated with the term otherworldliness, Inki blows your mind with a distorted “outside of your body” experience. This is my introduction to Inki but she is already turning heads across the globe with coverage from Clout, Nordic Music Central, ViviPlay and various others. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Destructive Interference’.

Following her single ‘Playing With Fire’, ‘Destructive Interference’ is Inki’s first release of 2023. In her inimitable way, ‘Destructive Interference’ tosses you into a sonic whirlpool where you are tossed about from one kaleidoscopic side to the other. Unlike ‘Playing With Fire’, the new single is slightly more soothing with a greater intimacy woven through the melody. Yet, while gentler and flowing, Inki retains her obscurity and indescribable intensity both melodically and lyrically.

Produced in collaboration with Mors, Inki finds the delicate line between hard-hitting synthetic and vulnerable organic sounds in ‘Destructive Interference’. The melody is a bit disconcerting, despite its hazy flow, leaving you a little confused; however, the hushed vocals make up for it with a comforting haunting warmth.

Penned with journalist Anna Marsý, ‘Destructive Interference’ is a bit of a love song describing two people in a relationship. The thing is, while there is love in the melody it perfectly captures the clashing energies of the individuals resulting in a complete breakdown in communication – the “destructive interference.”

“This time around I was telling her [Anna Marsý] how music production words sound like some type of love language to my ears. I made a list of words that I shared with her, words like cancellation, phasing, limiter, levels and destructive interference. I got goosebumps when she shared the lyrics, it was exactly what I was hoping for…” – Inki on ‘Destructive Interference’
