K4LT – LCPD (2023)

For just over 5 years (give or take), singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist K4LT has been entertaining audiences with his unique sound. Lying between the likes of Radiohead and Richard Dawson, his music both entrances you with grungy rapture and soothes you with a folksy hug. Pronounced “kalt”, translated into “cold” in German, K4LT explores the universal feeling of being lost in an uncertain reality aiming to resonate with listeners within this existential theme. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘LCPD’.

Re-emerging from a musical hiatus, ‘LCPD’ is the first release from K4LT in two years. As with many artists, the German musician was hit hard with the effects of Covid forcing him to step away from the scene. Instead of sitting on his laurels, he used this time to reflect and hone a sound that is utterly K4LT – and we hear it in ‘LCPD’.

Similar to ‘Boarding Pass’, the first track off his EP Endgame, we hear a strong electronic vibe flowing through ‘LCPD’. Inspired by Berlin’s techno scene, there is a bass-driven character to ‘LCPD’. Yet, while a hard-hitting synth vibe resonates from the single, a desperate grunge sentimentality can be heard. Dark and filled with despair, the guitar fills ‘LCPD’ with a mild distortion enhancing the vulnerability of K4LT. Interestingly enough, while you fall into a dismal mire, the incorporation of the Omnichord lifts your soul with its sonic strings.

One aspect I love about K4LT is his ability to capture the complex theme in the melody. ‘LCPD’ was inspired by “the loss of loved ones and various other personal setbacks that led to the most difficult time in K4LT’s life”. As a reaction to this loss of loved ones, particularly the “amicable breakup”, we fall into a mystic pool of emotion elegantly expressing his delicate, fragile state.
