Annie Anna – Drowning (2023)

Using dark acoustics with poetic lyricism in a charming folk tune, singer-songwriter Annie Anna oscillates between the light and dark of life. With music in her veins, Annie Anna (formerly Stephanie Farney) embraced her passion for music early in life. After listening to her father sing and play guitar, she chose to follow in his footsteps learning how to sing and play instruments. Skilled at the piano and guitar, which she taught herself how to play, Annie Anna has been entertaining audiences since her high school years. In 2016 she placed third in Kansas State University’s K-State Voice competition, and the following year she won the competition. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Drowning’.

Following her single ‘Loaded Gun’ in 2019, ‘Drowning’ is Annie Anna’s re-emergence on the US music scene. Focusing primarily on gigs during the past few years, Anna started building a reputation for confident, engaging performances; as well as garnering a loyal following in the process. In mid-2022, she started recording music again, hence we have ‘Drowning’.

Recorded at Annie Anna’s home with regular collaborator Riley Corbin, ‘Drowning’ draws primarily from folk with a soothing soul sound slithering through the single. A sophisticated arrangement of guitars, drums and interspersed piano has a harmonic flow but also a haunting tone. You feel as if you are floating along a sonic river with a wistful sensation; however, there is also that sense of drowning in the tumultuous waves. Add Annie Anna’s dulcet vocals and you have a skin-tingling, breath-taking, soul-stirring song.

One aspect I find intriguing with Annie Anna’s melodies is how her mature melodies are topped with raw vulnerability in her voice. Touching on broken relationships and inner frustration, ‘Drowning’ finds that line between human fragility and resilient self-discovery.

“’Drowning’ is a fierce portrayal of the suffocating experience of being under the control of another and losing your sense of self in a relationship. Inspired by my own coming-of-age story, the single exploits dark acoustic and electric undertones, dynamic drum world and intense vocals to express the anger and frustration that accompanies the experience of being manipulated.”– Annie Anna on ‘Drowning’

Tapping into her inner Hozier, US-based Annie Anna brings intensity, delicacy and intimacy to her music. She is definitely one to watch.
