Camens – On The Walk From The Picturehouse (2023)

Described as “…impressive…” (Thoughts Words Actions), “one of the most exciting acts emerging in the UK indie scene…” (RGM), and “a burst of fresh energy” (Sinusoidal Music), indie-rock group Camens is turning heads on an international scale. Featured on Amazing Radio US, Amazing Radio UK, XS Manchester, and BBC Introducing that saw them as ‘Record of the Week’, the lads are also establishing themselves as a significant part of the UK indie scene. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘On The Walk From The Picturehouse’.

Building on the success of 2022, Camens take their sound one step further with singles ‘Jacket Weather’ and ‘On The Walk From The Picturehouse’. Adopting a strong indie-rock sound, both singles embrace a toe-tapping tone to have listeners twirling about to an infectious melody. Interestingly enough, while the songs can appeal to modern-day audiences, a nostalgic flair exists taking us back to the sounds of yesteryear with their arrangement. ‘On The Walk From The Picturehouse’ is more obscure taking cues from the Beatles as well as Scouting For Girls.

Just as the melody can hold its own as an “off-kilter indie-pop” track, the poetic lyricism is deeper and more intimate. The band explains that “the song plays around with the idea that seeing someone you like and then taking them out can be similar in many ways to seeing a trailer before you watch a movie. In both situations, it’s not until you take the plunge that you’ll know if you both ‘click’ or if the film is all you hoped it would be.”

With an air of the romantic in a pop-infused cinematic wrapper, ‘On The Walk From The Picturehouse’ could easily be used as a soundtrack for one of those rom-com coming-of-age movies. Infectious and all-encompassing, I highly recommend Camens to all audiences.
