Snows Of Yesteryear – Danny’s Waltz (2023)

As the delicate mist of the Scottish Highlands rolls past with its mystical haze, so do the serene sounds of Scottish group Snows Of Yesteryear. With an emotional blend of classical and contemporary folk meets pop, Snows Of Yesteryear bring an innovative artistry to the UK music scene. Yet, while their place is established in the United Kingdom, the group is reaching audiences on a global scale with coverage from FV Blog to A&R Factory. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Danny’s Waltz’.

Hot on the heels of their single ‘Something Shatters’, ‘Danny’s Waltz’ is another track from Snows Of Yesteryear’s upcoming self-titled debut album (set for release later in 2023). As with ‘Something Shatters’ and ‘Counting Stars’, the group retains an ethereal cinematic soundscape with the new single. Mellifluous and soothing, you can imagine yourself twirling about in a dreamy state when listening to Snows of Yesteryear. The incorporation of Yuuka Yamada-Garner’s violin incorporates orchestral sensibilities, but a leaning toward contemporary pop is evident with Kat Orr’s elegant vocals.

In previous reviews, I have compared Snows Of Yesteryear with The Corrs and Kate Bush, and I continue to stand by those comparisons. Interestingly enough, while a strong leaning toward The Corrs remains in ‘Danny’s Waltz’, Kat Orr’s otherworldly voice shows a more unique tone. Soft and gentle but with bold obscurity, Orr fuses with the instrumentation to hold you in the palm of her hand.

While ‘Danny’s Waltz’ has a heart-warming aspect to its laidback nature, the single actually is rather profound and poignant. Orr explains that ‘Danny’s Waltz’ “has a specific meaning…the lyrics are about how we can be bent out of shape by relationships and come from a dark place I was in where I was struggling with how to move myself forward, spiralling and seeking answers where there seemed to be only chaos…it’s about recognising the flaws that I saw both in myself and other people, a bittersweet song of redemption and transformation.”

Sincere, sentimental and with an innocence sprinkled atop a sophisticated melody, Snows Of Yesteryear release their single ‘Danny’s Waltz’.
