Munk Duane – My Fellow Americans (2023)

From 2015 (give or take) onwards, US-based Munk Duane has been creating diverse, inspiring and creative music for the masses. A recording artist, film composer and producer, Duane has his finger in many musical pies so to say, with his compositions being licensed to numerous television shows including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Sopranos, NCIS, 60 Minutes and the Super Bowl Half-Time Show. Moreover, he composed the score for the indie film The House Across The Street starring Eric Roberts.

Alongside all of the film achievements, Munk Duane has received coverage from Billboard Magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, Send Me Your Ears, Illustrate Magazine, Hype Magazine, and Sinusoidal Music (to name just a few). He is also an award-winning artist with two New England Music Awards – one for ‘Male Performer of the Year 2018’ and the other ‘Video of the Year 2019’.

Alright, now that a brief glimpse into his accomplished background is over, let’s get to what we’re looking at in this review: ‘My Fellow Americans’. The first release for Munk Duane in 2023, ‘My Fellow Americans’ follows the well-received single ‘Just A Word’. Adopting his distinctive soul meets funk and pop sound, ‘My Fellow Americans’ drags us back to the days of Quincy Jones and Earth, Wind and Fire, while retaining a modern-day neo-soul tone placing his music easily alongside the likes of Bruno Mars.

Produced at Magic Garden Mastering with Brian Lucey (Post Malone and The Black Keys), ‘My Fellow Americans’ is a harmonic melding of pounding drums, dynamic guitars, bass (courtesy of Steve Davis), soaring keys, and the iconic soul-stirring horn section necessary for any awesome soul song. A funky groove oozes from the passionate music getting you to tap your toe, nod your head and sing along to the catchy chorus. Interestingly enough, while the soulful music sweeps into your ear and scratches your spine, the upbeat joviality belies a more powerful message.

“There are forces that are tirelessly and relentlessly working to pit us against each other in 2023 America and they are succeeding. The new song is a call to place love for our commonalities ahead of our differences and to resist the wedge that those with self-serving agendas, with no regard for the societal and generational fall-out, would drive between us.” – Munk Duane on ‘My Fellow Americans’
