Joe Bygraves – Someone Else (2023)

With his soft guitar, sensational vocals and singable songs, singer-songwriter Joe Bygraves has been described as “showcasing an exceptional level of creativity…” (Sinusoidal Music), “ambitious and talented” (Send Me Your Ears), and “powerful and emotional” (Music Taste). Along with the press singing his praises, UK-based Bygraves is also building a reputation for formidable performances supporting Paloma Faith, Jools Holland and Ronan Keating. This is my introduction to the lad but over the past six years, according to Spotify, Bygraves has soared through the music scene with swift skill and charm. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Someone Else’.

Following his 2021 track ‘Let Me Go’ and 2020’s ‘Stand As One’ – a song that became the official campaign anthem of the #WeMakeEvents movement representing the music industry during the Covid-19 pandemic – ‘Someone Else’ is Bygraves’ first release in 2023. Gaining airtime from Amazing Radio and BBC Introducing East, ‘Someone Else’ is a “moody but memorable ballad.” As with ‘Let Me Go’, a leaning toward Ed Sheeran is heard in the pop song; however, slivers of Coldplay with tinges of David Gray weave through the track. In other words, while ‘Someone Else’ can fit perfectly alongside Ed Sheeran, the slight sprinkles of indie-rock bring an edginess to the tune.

It’s true that the energetic guitars and subtle drumbeats create a captivating sound to hold your heart in the palm of his hands, but it is the passionate vocals that clinch the deal. Rich, bold and powerful, ‘Someone Else’ wraps you in a warm embrace as you traipse along the elegant melody with Joe Bygraves by your side. Smiles and charm ooze from this lad, yet there is a vulnerability in the harmonic voice that cuts beneath in a fragile, delicate way. It’s a fascinating collision of soothing flow and tender heartbreak that makes ‘Someone Else’ anthemic.
