LOZ – The One That Got Away (2023)

Described as “…touching and inspiring” (Sinusoidal Music), “…offering solace and comfort” (Couch Magazine) and an ability to “…create powerful music that resonates with listeners” (Plastic Magazine), singer-songwriter LOZ connects with audiences on an intimate level. Inspired by life in its entirety, the UK-based artist uses life experiences (both personal, friends and fictional) to create anthemic and emotional music. Hailing from Manchester, he spent years tinkering about with sound production in his bedroom; now, he is releasing sophisticated and intriguing music for the masses. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘The One That Got Away’.

The third single from LOZ in 2023, ‘The One That Got Away’ follows well-received tracks ‘Don’t Wanna Be Reminded’ and ‘It’s Gonna Be Okay’. As with the previous two songs, LOZ once again reaches deep into personal experiences sharing poignant themes in a passionate setting. ‘The One That Got Away’ touches on heartbreak but with a slightly different stance. Instead of focusing on relationships, the struggles of being in them and the emotions when letting them go, LOZ emphasises the loss of a close connection with the angst in a non-ballad, synth-driven melody.

“Telling a story of losing the one thing you know you won’t find again and the frustrations when it happens in slow motion right in front of you. This song was written at a time where LOZ was losing his best friend, and nothing could stop it…” – from ‘The One That Got Away’ press release

Unlike ‘Don’t Wanna Be Reminded’, ‘The One That Got Away’ is a toe-tapping, jovial and bouncy pop song – one that would be welcomed at a festival or on a dance floor. What I find intriguing is how LOZ’s distress and vulnerable desperation drips from his vocals; however, this melancholy is hidden by the light-hearted, laidback, smile-inducing instrumentation. Lying somewhere between P!nk and Ed Sheeran, there is a boldness in the intimate lyricism with LOZ shouting “you’re the only one I gave a f*ck about”.

Laying all his emotions bare for audiences to see (or rather hear), LOZ sends us another chart-topper with the single ‘The One That Got Away’.
