Marcus Smith – Sandwiches (2023)
From TPJL News to The Music Asylum, SONO Music Group, Music For All, Sinusoidal Music, Music Arena, and many more, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Smith is reaching audiences across the globe. Along with coverage from notable independent publications, Smith has performed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Enshrinement weekend AND with Shaq and Charles Barkley on TNT in 2022. Inspired by the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Bruno Mars and Childish Gambino, there’s a bit of an eclecticism about Smith’s sound. Wrapping comedy in a rap meets rock meets pop meets soul package, it is inimitable and intriguing.
On the heels of his well-received single ‘Day After Day’, Marcus Smith embraces the power of rock in his new single ‘Sandwiches’. The Lenny Kravitz influence oozes forth in his dynamic guitars bringing a strong 90s rock tone to the track. Yet, while this style is in the fore, along with slivers of hard rock in the backing vocals, there is far more to this heavier rock single. Incorporating rap in his rich vocal execution with a shimmer of pop along the melody, Smith shows audiences his innovation, diversity and flexibility as an artist.
Penned and originally recorded with Adam Korbesmeyer at the now defunct White Out Audio, ‘Sandwiches’ is a re-release to honour its 10-year anniversary. It was originally released on Black & Broke’s EP, Hot James For The People To Dance To, but after some re-recording and updating ‘Sandwiches’ is once again available for everyone to dance to once again.
One aspect I love about ‘Sandwiches’ is the comedic element. A hard, heavy, almost gritty melody is heard in ‘Sandwiches’; however, the fun ridiculousness breaks through in the amusing lyricism. Marcus Smith explains that ‘Sandwiches’ is “…all about fun and eating sandwiches. Eating sandwiches, liking sandwiches, and not sharing when someone wants your sandwich.”
