Ocean LeClair – Verrückt Nach Dir (2023)
Known for her engaging shows, singer-songwriter Ocean LeClair has performed with artists like Findlay, CVC, TTRRUUCES, Gag Salon and Suki Waterhouse. However, it is not only her gigs where she garners a following but she is reaching an international audience via blogs, playlists and radio stations. From Phoenix FM to iHeart Radio, LeClair’s music touches souls on a cross-continental level. Originally from Germany, LeClair has lived in various countries embracing different cultures and fusing these experiences into eclectic music. French electropop, American folk, indie-rock, dream-pop – the songstress continues to surprise us with her unique slant on songs.
Following her single ‘I Thought I Could Swim’, ‘Verrückt Nach Dir’ is Ocean LeClair’s first release in her native tongue. Translated to ‘crazy about you’, the song touches on the vulnerability of being in love and the powerful effects thereof. Inspired by artists like Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave, LeClair uses poetic lyricism like medicine and paint, “conjuring the ghost of the moment and making it eternal” – this is all too evident in the new single.
Originally penned as a ballad to confess her love for her housemate, ‘Verrückt Nach Dir’ transformed into a Kraftwerk-inspired pop song after a long night in the studio. Incorporating elements of grunge into an electropop melody, LeClair adds an obscure haunting to what could be deemed a pop song. Interestingly enough, the guitar-driven tone brings a gothic tone to ‘Verrückt Nach Dir’ while retaining flickers of EDM throughout. In other words, it’s an eclectic, experimental and otherworldly single that can hardly be defined or imitated.
One of the more intriguing aspects of ‘Verrückt Nach Dir’ is how LeClair makes it both heavy and hard-hitting but surreal and mellifluous. Gentle vocals traipse along the melody whispering words with poetic elegance, but the vulnerability dripping from her voice brings a raw melancholy to the track.
Bold but soft, brash but gentle, disconcerting but comfortable, Ocean LeClair hits all the bases with her eclectic single ‘Verrückt Nach Dir’.
