Hounds Haul – Odyssey (2023)

For approximately four or five years now, UK-based group Hounds Haul has been entertaining audiences with their indie-rock meets post-punk meets alternative rock meets…well, it’s just a unique brand of rock that is entirely Hounds Haul. Beginning as the outlet for years of frontman Adam Bosworth’s accumulated work, Hounds Haul technically formed as a solo project. Yet, Bosworth felt a band would better suit the sound he was aiming for – enter Jamie Smith (bass), Rien De Keyser (synths and keys), and Alex Ablett (lead guitar).

By the end of 2019, the lads had released two self-recorded singles, ‘Red Sycamore’ and ‘Capitol’, both of which would receive extensive local radio play. Alongside the coverage from BBC Introducing (and many others), Hounds Haul began reaching international audiences with features on TJPL News, Mesmerized, Havoc Underground, Clout, and Its All Indie. Not to mention their touring throughout the UK and Europe. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Odyssey’.

Described by bassist Smith as “Tame Impala meets Depeche Mode”, Hounds Haul add a nostalgic flair to the rock single ‘Odyssey’. Shimmering beneath a guitar-driven sound with pounding drums, the sliver of synths is delicate and elegant (even though they bring a bold rock punch as well). Yet, just as ‘Odyssey’ sends you drifting off on a glistening sonic river, the tumultuous waves beneath engulf you when heavier, harder guitars burst through. While the instrumentation really gets the heart pumping, it is Bosworth’s vocals that add a grittiness to the track.

Penned as part of their three-part project, The Odyssey, ‘Odyssey’ is the second single following ‘Under Glacial’. The band explained that “…the project was written and created during lockdown and focuses around exploration and escapism. ‘Odyssey’ is the hero song to the three-part project…if picturing the project as a movie and ‘Odyssey’ as Act 2, that’s where all the action happens.”
