The Other Side Reviewstrack of the day

Track of the Day: City Island – Shining Light (2023)

Embracing their love for Motown and soul music, lifelong friends Nick Pretel and Josh Anthony create music “…to let everyone experience some of the love and inspiration we get from them.” Hailing from New York City, the US-based pair have been described as “…energetic and catchy…” (Plastic Magazine) and “soulful…” (Couch Mag) reaching audiences across the globe. In addition to these publications, City Island has received critical acclaim from Bronx Buzz, Bronx Times, and Bronx Daily. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Shining Light’.

Following their single ‘Not Alone On Christmas’, City Island enter 2023 with the soulful song ‘Shining Light’. Influenced by the likes of Sam Smith, Coldplay and Queen, the lads aim to “unite people by communicating their experiences of joy…” Interestingly enough, while the smoothness of Sam Smith can be heard in ‘Shining Light’, the single is far more retro soul meets pop with a funkiness slathered over the melody. Embracing their inner Motown with vintage funk, ‘Shining Light’ is filled with groovy vibes wrapping you in a kaleidoscopic bubble of music.

Penned as a declaration of love, the powerful vocals and bold instrumentation move your heart with their toe-tapping charm. Unlike ‘Not Alone On Christmas’ which embraces a twinkling pop with indie-pop sentiments in its steady tone, ‘Shining Light’ is upbeat with a bounce to the jovial soundscape. For me, while the melody can hold its own it is Pretel’s vocals that enhance the soulfulness of the song. Tapping into their inner Stevie Wonder with a tinge of John Legend, the dulcet tones are what stick with you with a mellifluous sincerity.
