Lisa Cerbone – Scout Meets Boo (2010)

From Pop Passion to Delusions of Adequacy, and All Music Guide, singer-songwriter Lisa Cerbone has been referred to as “a rare talent…” (Boomkat), “…beautiful and rich.” (Collected Sounds) and “…simply stunning” (Indie Workshop). For over 20 years, the US-based songstress has been working on a collection of melodies that are entirely unique. Inspired by artists like Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young, Maria Taylor and the Great Lake Swimmers, there is an old-school folk but modern-day indie edginess to Cerbone’s music. Come with us as we delve into her music with the song ‘Scout Meets Boo’.

Originally released in 2010, ‘Scout Meets Boo’ follows her well-received ten-track album We Were All Together. The Simon & Garfunkel influence is heavily evident in ‘Scout Meets Boo’ with the charming finger-picking guitar style. Yet, while Cerbone taps into her inner Paul Simon with the intimate melody, a childish obscurity is present in her vocal execution. It lies somewhere between Stevie Nicks, Elliot Page and Sinead O’Connor; then again, it is probably a tone that is purely Lisa Cerbone for I have not heard this beautiful oddness ever before.

While Lisa Cerbone’s unique vocals are the focus on the melody, or at least to me, the underlying melody is just as intriguing. Weaving an elegant acoustic tone into the simplistic soundscape, her combination of guitars and percussion ooze folk-inspired charm. Despite the minimalistic, barebones nature of ‘Scout Meets Boo’, there is a kaleidoscopic essence wafting through the song in a haunting way. Sincere, sentimental, raw and sensitive, Lisa Cerbone explores human vulnerability in a delicate way with ‘Scout Meets Boo’.
