A Chat with littleuniverses (20.03.23)

With the aim of connecting and inspiring others, Canadian singer-songwriter littleuniverses actually creates little universes with her poetic, dramatic and enchanting music. We speak with this songstress about her self-titled album, what music means to her and future plans.

OSR: What drew you to music?

littleuniverses: Self-expression. I always considered music to be a place where I could say whatever I wanted to say without reservation. I just always appreciated how musicians could transfer feeling into their instruments (voice and other) to communicate to people from all walks of life and pasts. I loved the connectivity and I just wanted to find a way to do that myself with music.

OSR: What inspires you to make music?

littleuniverses: Life, books, films, people….I just like to experience things, feelings and to question what is happening internally.

OSR: What does music mean to you?

littleuniverses: Music is the ability to communicate with a language that is for the most part universally understood.  I believe that music is a channel that allows for a deeper form of connection. I aspire to be an artist with the ability to inspire through her craft and connect with an audience from all walks of life. The connection to art for everyone is unique in the way that it can strike a chord so deep that it provides strength, solace, empathy, and joy through the experience. It is a gift that breathes a breath of life into us all.

OSR: What can you tell us about your self-titled album?

littleuniverses: As a general note, this ten-song album encompasses everything that I am, have become and all that I am as an artist. My vision for my album is for its listener to experience it as a movie with highs, lows, and moments of intensity. I hope to give a voice to those who might also feel that they have difficulty expressing their feelings. I express this because for multiple reasons I felt unable and afraid to express myself for so many years. My goal is to inspire an audience and provide an outlet for expression. With this album, I storytell in a way that I believe immerses the listener in each of its songs and has them feel a part of the music. I want listeners to connect and immerse themselves in this journey and possibly find comfort.

OSR: What is your creative process?

littleuniverses: My music usually starts from my poetry or a topic that I have churning in my mind. I’ll usually write something and have a flash of how I want to sing it then start to compose it. It can happen at any time of the day. I sometimes get a strange lurking feeling when I’m about to write something that I feel is significant to me. Like a feeling of unrest until it all pours out.

Most of the time I start writing on guitar but with this album, I did a lot of it directly on my piano. I would just hear the music in my mind on the piano and start experimenting with Logic Pro. This album is also different because I wrote a lot of it on the piano and used a combination of piano and guitar. I found that the piano took it to a new level.

OSR: If you could change one thing about the album, what would it be?

littleuniverses: I don’t want to change anything. I’m genuinely happy with it and feel that it really expresses who I am. I would, however, alter the lyric print-out of my album on vinyl and CD; I accidentally added a couple of extra verses to a few songs after sending it for print. On the other hand, maybe that’s a good thing.

OSR: What do you hope people take from your music?

littleuniverses: I want listeners to connect and immerse themselves into this journey and possibly find comfort.

OSR: What do you think makes you unique as an artist?

littleuniverses: Possibly that I am a poet.

OSR: Do you have future plans for littleuniverses?

littleuniverses: I plan to put on some interesting stage performances and tour with my album. I am currently working on ways to make this happen.
