The Marsh Family – My Storybook (2023)

It’s been said that musical talent is inherited and this is entirely evident in The Marsh Family. Similar to The Osmonds, The Jackson 5 or even the Von Trapp family in The Sound of Music, there is a harmonic beauty to this naturally talented group. Since going viral in 2020, father Ben, mother Danielle, and their children Alfie, Thomas, Ella and Tess are reaching international audiences with their intriguing melodies. Featured on the New York Times, Good Music Radar, Rock Era Magazine, TJPL News, as well as performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and the BBC’s Comic Relief Show, The Marsh Family is sharing their awe-inspiring music with the world. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘My Storybook’.

Following their well-received singles ‘In The Bleak’ and ‘Biological Clock’, The Marsh Family add a tinge of country into their indie-folk-flavoured music. A heart-warming blend of guitars, drums, ukelele and horn section comes together in a toe-tapping arrangement. One element I love about The Marsh Family is how they always seem to place a grin on my face lifting my heart up in a hopeful way even if I’m having the worst day ever. Setting listeners adrift on a kaleidoscopic sonic cloud, ‘My Storybook’ lifts your spirits, hugs you close and allows you to view all the good in life.

While the melody can hold its own in an upbeat, Disney movie-esque style, it is the incorporation of all the family members’ voices that intrigues me. In ‘My Storybook’, all of the voices sing together in a harmonic flow but I always love the younger children’s contribution. I think it is probably Ella or Tess singing the chorus but that youthful joy and hopefulness enhances The Marsh Family’s whimsical sound. In an interview with Send Me Your Ears, The Marsh Family explain that “—there needed to be space for everyone’s voices, but the hook had to send a message that celebrated the way that we feature in one another’s lives, even if we’re not there forever…expect a kind of Graceland-meets-Disney with bongos and ukelele wrapped around ideas of memory, nostalgic and innocence…”
