Laughing In Slow Motion – CABIN FEVER (2023)

If Foo Fighters were to have a child with Modest Mouse, but it was raised by Alexisonfire, the chances are Laughing In Slow Motion would be that kid. Formed in 2019, the hard rock quartet have been described as “fierce and honest” (Illustrate Magazine), “dazzling…” (Less Than 1000 Followers), and “…known for its neck-breaking track that will compel you to bang your head hard” (Sinusoidal Music). Along with these quotes, the Canadian group has been turning heads internationally featured on Mesmerized, TPJL News, Send Me Your Ears, and many more. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘CABIN FEVER’.

Following their single ‘Safest Sound’, the lads retain their unique hard rock tone in ‘CABIN FEVER’. The bold combination of pounding drums and dynamic guitars brings a hard-hitting feel to the song; however, there is also a mellifluous, soothing and calm quality to the melody. Well, as soothing as a melancholic hard rock song can be. While the melody tosses you into a sonic whirlpool ensnaring your senses, it is Kiel Burwell’s rich vocals that captivated me. Gruff but warm. Hard but with a charming elegance. Hard-hitting but with a sensitivity slithering through, Burwell oozes passion in this heart-warming single. Of course, I’m not saying Alex Tait (guitar), Jason Norman (bass guitar) and Matthew Stolarik (drums) are any less passionate.

Penned during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, ‘CABIN FEVER’ is just that – a representation of cabin fever. During the pandemic, Burwell embraced Stoicism – a philosophical approach formed by logic stating that the practice of virtue is both necessary and sufficient to achieving happiness. This single touches on frustration, angst, depression, struggles and inner turmoil in the melancholic tone. Yet, while the band elegantly captures the bad, they also share the empowering, optimistic good of overcoming struggle. Burwell shares that “you will ride a rollercoaster of emotions. You will think about your life and its meaning…and you will rock out and have fun while reflecting on a life of purpose and kindness.”
