Linda Sussman – Don’t Let It Rain (2023)

From Canada to the USA, Brazil to the UK, and Australia to France, singer-songwriter Linda Sussman is garnering a loyal following on an international scale. Over the past five years, artist Sussman has released four critically acclaimed albums and six singles (including her most recent track ‘Don’t Let It Rain’). This is my introduction to Linda Sussman and her unique folk-blues meets jazz sound; however, she is already well known for touring as a solo artist and winning awards across the globe. Come with us as we take a gander (or rather a listen) at her well-received discography.

Following her well-received single ‘A Power You’ll Never Know’ – a song touching on women’s rights, Sussman releases her song ‘Don’t Let It Rain’. As with her previous work, Sussman captures the essence of vulnerability, intimacy and human fragility in ‘Don’t Let It Rain’. A whimsical ballad touching on the estranged relationship between a parent and their child with a yearning for the child to return home, ‘Don’t Let It Rain’ is sure to resonate with audiences. Sussman explains that “…people remain estranged from loved ones because they don’t know how to move beyond hurt and anger. The ‘open stretch of sky’ lyric at the end of the chorus reflects the time and distance that have come between them…” Interestingly enough, while the track has a whimsical vulnerability, there is a sense of optimistic hopefulness woven into the sonic tapestry.

A collaborative effort, ‘Don’t Let It Rain’ merges the skills of guitarist Mike Nugent and bassist Kevin Kelly with Linda Sussman’s vocals and guitar. Using her signature finger-picking style, ‘Don’t Let It Rain’ brings a heartfelt folk tone to the melody; however, Nugent’s electric guitar adds a tinge of blues to the song. What I find particularly appealing about this track is not Sussman’s soul-stirring vocals or the tender, simplistic soundscape – it is the raw innocence within a sophisticated arrangement. A palpable feeling of wistful fragility exists in her soft vocals but, at the same time, ‘Don’t Let It Rain’ is a powerful blast making you wipe a tear from your eye.
