David J – Moments I Missed (2023)
In 2020, the US-based David J released his debut track ‘Prom King’ to critical acclaim being described by Talk About Pop Music as having the ability “…to captivate with his music’s natural warmth”. Along with Talk About Pop Music, this singer-songwriter is turning heads across the globe with critical acclaim from Sinusoidal Music, Buzz Music, The Nash News and Zone Nights. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Moments I Missed’.
It’s common for people to look back at their life and wonder about the moments they missed – I think this is the core of FOMO (fear of missing out). With the aim of connecting with audiences as an individual, 19-year-old David J captures the feelings of vulnerability, nostalgia and whimsy in ‘Moments I Missed’. Interestingly enough, while there is a depth to the poignant single where David J wishes he could “…go back and change things before they start to spiral out of control”, a bittersweet acceptance of this lost moment weaves a tender, empowering thread into the sonic tapestry.
Penned as part of his upcoming EP, ‘Moments I Missed’ is David J’s jump into an autobiographical storytelling style. Unlike his previous track ‘The Renditions’, ‘Moments I Missed’ adopts a smoother, more flowing arrangement setting you adrift on a glistening sonic river. Melding elements of R&B with pop, this single has toe-tapping vibes and can be easily placed alongside Shawn Mendes or Charlie Puth. The thing is, while a strong melancholic sentimentality is heard in the lyricism and melody, ‘Moments I Missed’ brings a heart-warming elegance to audiences. I have to admit one of my favourite elements is the incorporation of Tom Reyes on the guitar adding some bluesy rock to the pop ballad.
Sincere, sentimental and brutally honest, David J shows a maturity beyond his years in ‘Moments I Missed’.
