New Yank Yorkies – Trick of the Heart (2023)
Wearing hats of many colours, New Yank Yorkies is a collective of artists, producers and songwriters with a passion for music. Road-tested and approved, the members of New Yank Yorkies have impressive pedigrees of their own, but even more so as a group garnering a reputation for “foot on the monitor heads down good time old-school rock ‘n’ roll”. In the days before the internet, before social media and all that new-fangled technology, pure rock existed and New Yank Yorkies bring those sounds to modern-day audiences. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Trick of the Heart’.
Following their well-received single ‘Bring Back The Love’, ‘Trick of the Heart’ is the first release from New Yank Yorkies since 2021. Beginning 2023 with a bang, Geoff Gibbons (lead vocals and guitar), Jay Buettner (guitar), John Ellis (guitar, steel pedal and keys), Rob Becker (bass) and Pat Steward (drums and percussion) fuse blues, soul and rock in their unique sound.
Unlike ‘Bring Back The Love’, the lads adopt a slightly lighter, chilled-out vibe to ‘Trick of the Heart’. Of course, this does not mean they are abandoning their core rock roots; instead, there is a groovier, toe-tapping joviality wrapped in a buoyant blues meets rock style. The kaleidoscopic arrangement of guitars and pounding drums gently caress you while Gibbons’ vocals pull you close in a warm sonic embrace – and, in my opinion, this is what makes a song infectious and intoxicating.
Seasoned musicians with outstandingly impressive careers, New Yank Yorkies show the sophistication and elegance of a life in music. Interestingly enough, while the maturity of the artists shines through in ‘Trick of the Heart’, an innocent rawness belies the charming melodies. Vocalist Geoff Gibbons’ advice to people looking to succeed is to “love what you do and do it every day” – and, boy, does that shine through with the New Yank Yorkies.
