D2UR – Remember My Name (2023)

Rising from the wreckage of a cover band, Diane and Mike Isbister formed the insatiable rock band D2UR approximately 10 years ago. Described as a “no frills rock band…who strive to write great modern rock music”, the Canadian pair has turned heads across the globe with features on Tinnitist, Stereo Stickman, Fireworks Magazine, MNPR Magazine, and The Colorado Phil Show. While Diane and Mike Isbister are the “nucleus” of D2UR, the band’s fuller sound is brought to life by various talented musicians. In an interview with Canadian Beats, the duo shared that the group is “…rounded out by a talented team of David Sikorski-Thorn on guitar, John Colburn on bass and Stephen Broadhurst on drums”. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Remember My Name’.

Following their single ‘Live Again’, ‘Remember My Name’ is D2UR’s first release in 2023. Similar to ‘Live Again’ and ‘Right Now’, this new single has a rough and rugged “rock-ness” in its gritty presentation. Interestingly enough, while ‘Remember My Name’ has a brash, abrupt quality to it, there is a soothing harmony between the instrumentation and Diane’s raw vocals. It is as if D2UR find the balance between smoothly melodic and gritty rawness in the rock-inspired tune. While the melody can hold its own, it is the vocal execution that captures my attention. An obscurity similar to Bonnie Tyler exists in Diane Isbister’s voice; however, she could easily sing you to sleep with rich, soulful tones.

What I love about ‘Remember My Name’ is not the nostalgic throwback to the sounds of the 80s. It is not the carefully crafted rock with tinges of folk woven through the sonic tapestry. No, it is the profoundness of the song. Often referred to as “the pizza song”, ‘Remember My Name’ was initially formulated on a pizza box top after a party. It then sat in the band’s studio for over a year until the composition came alive and this labour of love was realised. D2UR explain that ‘Remember My Name’ celebrates “…the times we have had…and tribute to those who love us as the song is about being remembered when we are gone. It is a cry to live again and again and to be carried forth in memories of those who go forward.”
