The Trusted – Terrible Fight (2023)

From the dream of finding love in a faraway place in ‘Arkansas’ to an exposition of living in the 21st century in ‘Millennium’, indie-pop group The Trusted tackles life in its entirety with their passionate music. Since their debut single ‘Turbulence’ in 2017, the UK-based foursome shows an eclectic fusion of indie-rock, alternative rock, and pop with both a retro and modern-day feel. Receiving critical acclaim from notable press like Amazing Radio, Earmilk, Clout, American Songwriter and many more, The Trusted is reaching audiences on an international scale. Come with us as we look at (or rather listen to) the most recent addition to their discography, ‘Terrible Fight’.

Following the well-received single ‘Arkansas’, ‘Terrible Fight’ is The Trusted’s first release of 2023 – and what a way to begin the new year. Unlike ‘Arkansas’, the band adopt a more upbeat, high-paced sound in the new single. Adding a nostalgic take to their indie-pop sound, ‘Terrible Fight’ stings of the 90s/early-200s alternative rock and pop-punk; however, there is a contemporary edginess with the underlying synth tones. This movement from an indie-rock ballad to a jovial, hyper-pop-punk meets indie-pop tune elegantly showcases the band’s versatility.

While I love The Trusted for their eclectic and unique music, it is the passion and profoundness behind their melodies that add that something special for me. When speaking about ‘Terrible Fight’, vocalist Tom Cunningham explains that the song is “…about being metaphorically beaten up. Part of growing up is realising that life is basically an emotional/psychological boxing ring, whether it’s heartbreak, politics or loss, it kind of feels like we are all being hit from all sides. I wanted ‘Terrible Fight’ to be a song about being knocked over by all these heavy punches as well as our ability to just keep moving forward”.

Sprinkling a whimsical innocence atop the forceful song, The Trusted once again presents a sophistication and maturity that far surpasses their young years.
