Lucifer’s Beard – Lady Loser (2022)

As with notable publications like Edgar Allan Poets, Obscure Sound and York Calling, Lucifer’s Beard has crossed our virtual desks and because we like his stuff so much we just need to say more about the artist. A solo project from UK-based singer-songwriter Chris Barnes, Lucifer’s Beard has been referred to as “…the epitome of indie-rock” (Turtle Tempo), and “…stirring the listeners and leave the atmosphere electrified” (Indie O Clock). Embracing elements of indie-rock, alternative rock and garage rock, tinged with powerful punk sounds, Lucifer’s Beard is a force to be reckoned with. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Lady Loser’.

Following the well-received track ‘The Guy With A Black Eye’, Lucifer’s Beard adopts an eclectic combination of indie-rock, classic rock and scatterings of blues-rock in ‘Lady Loser’. Unlike ‘The Guy With A Black Eye’, the new single is smoother and more flowing with a toe-tapping sensation throughout the arrangement. It appears to have just as hard a rock flavour, but Barnes’ vocals are more enticing and soothing – despite the gruffness, of course.

In an interview with York Calling, Lucifer’s Beard noted that ‘Lady Loser’ is “a conceptual follow up single to ‘The Guy With A Black Eye’ as it’s all about what happened to TGWABE years later. What did he turn into…maybe he still holds onto that arrogance that led him to where he is now…” In my opinion, ‘Lady Loser’ is filled with a great deal of self-indulgent arrogance oozing forth from the powerful melody; however, a sense of vulnerability wafts into the sonic cloud representing the themes of loss and rejection. Yet, just as the vulnerability and fragility are evident, a sentimental hopefulness and forgiveness are also heard – so, is the song about melancholic arrogance or an empowering hopefulness? I leave you to decide. All I know is that Lucifer’s Beard once again leaves me with a musical masterpiece to enjoy.
