The Duke of Randwick – I’d Never (2022)

For approximately five years, the Australian rock band The Duke of Randwick has been sharing music for the masses. From their 2018 debut EP I to 2021’s single ‘DAWN’, The Duke of Randwick has been described as “masters of alternative rock…” (Sinusoidal Music), “…innovative and versatile…” (Rising Artists Blog), and “…full of complexity” (Two Story Melody). Formed in Randwick, New South Wales, Jack (guitar and vocals), Daniel (bass) and Zen (drums) have gone from local radio play to international coverage and a global fanbase. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘I’d Never’.

Following their metal meets alternative rock single ‘DAWN’, ‘I’d Never’ is The Duke of Randwick’s first single in 2022. Bold and brash, the lads continue their hard-hitting metal/alternative rock sound in the new single. Blending elements of metal, alternative rock, and post-punk with electronic punk-inspired pounding, ‘I’d Never’ hits you in the back of the head leaving you slightly disoriented. Yet, while you might feel a little overwhelmed with this blast of angsty noise in a dark veil of sound, there is a soothing charm woven into the melody. A harmonic flow within a distorted, angsty blast.

Oozing passionate aggression, The Duke of Randwick explains that ‘I’d Never’ is inspired by rage touching on “the battle within between good and evil for the sake of the soul.” Reminiscent of The Prodigy, there is a ferocity behind the single; however, as I mentioned before, it also has a soothing charm that is particularly evident in the slower, steadier and moving electropop outro. It is this elegant transition from a fiery mid-section to a flowing outro that heightens your senses with an instant flood of sound, then quickly peeters out to leave you calm.

“’I’d Never’ is the dark side of yourself as it forces its way out…it is the sound of embracing your Jungian shadow and succumbing to all that has been hidden or repressed.” – The Duke of Randwick on ‘I’d Never’
