Little Champion – Oops I Got Sad (2022)

If Weezer were to have a child with Fleetwood Mac, the chances are it would be Little Champion. Boasting soothing indie-folk beneath bold pop-rock, Little Champion’s melodic arrangement is smooth and gentle while retaining a heavier rock blast. The solo project of multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Dustin Goldklang, Little Champion has been featured on notable blogs like Obscure Sound and Sinusoidal Music reaching an international audience. After a hiatus of approximately three years, Goldklang is once again releasing music with the latest addition to his discography being ‘Oops I Got Sad’.

Following his two-track EP 2 Songs, Little Champion adopts an upbeat, bouncy and jovial tone in ‘Oops I Got Sad’. The flowing melody seems to nod to the pop-rock sounds of the 90s; however, there is a more contemporary pop-rock woven into the harmonic arrangement – something fresh but familiar. Interestingly enough, while the track has brightness, the message of ‘Oops I Got Sad’ is poignant and melancholic. It is this juxtaposition that highlights Goldklang’s depth as an artist.

Recorded and produced by Dustin Goldklang in his home studio above the garage, the new single delicately explores the vulnerability of people suffering from depression. He explains that “’Oops I Got Sad’ is, somewhat paradoxically, a light-hearted song about depression. I find exaggerating difficult feelings to the point of it seeming ridiculous and funny helps me cope with and process them.”

Sincere, sentimental, reflective and introspective, ‘Oops I Got Sad’ is a brutally honest look at human fragility. This is my introduction to Little Champion, and I cannot wait to hear what else he has up his sleeve.
