Mark Newman – At The Border (2022)

An established professional, singer-songwriter Mark Newman is a veteran artist with an impressive background. Along with his intriguing solo releases, Newman has travelled across the globe several times sharing the stage with iconic artists like Sting, Elvis Costello, The Doobie Brothers, Don Felder of The Eagles, Carla Thomas and many more. I am embarrassed to say this is my introduction to Mark Newman considering his background; however, I am thrilled to have come across him. The latest addition to his well-received discography is the single ‘At The Border’.

Following his single ‘Tulsa’, ‘At The Border’ is Newman’s first release in 2022. In ‘Tulsa’ we heard a masterful blending of soul, rock and blues, but ‘At The Border’ introduces a more country-inspired sound to his music. Retaining the classic rock design, a retro vibe flows through the soul-stirring tune. The thing is, while Newman’s songs do have a vintage flavour, there is a contemporary edginess bringing a fresh but familiar element to the tracks.

Full-bodied and robust, ‘At The Border’ is an elegant guitar-driven song. Yet, while there is a sophistication to the melody, a slight grittiness and vulnerability can be felt in the tune. You receive a warm sonic hug in the song but there is a poignancy in which you can lose yourself.

Touching on the topic of oppression and overcoming difficult circumstances, Mark Newman explores the fragility of humans with a delicate but bold melody. Newman explains that ‘At The Border’ “was originally written with the struggles people were experiencing fleeing the war in Ukraine in mind, but it is also inspired by the millions of people all around the world trying to escape oppression and hunger on an ongoing basis.”

Sincere, sentimental, reflective and honest, Mark Newman shows true musical artistry at its best with the intimate, vulnerable single ‘At The Border’.
