TerraTara – Empty Apartment (2022)

Travelling back and forth from Slocan, British Columbia and Southern Oregon, singer-songwriter TerraTara is inspired by the beauty surrounding her and expresses it through music. Passionate, powerful and heart-warming, her unique sound captures your heart; however, just as soothing as the melodies are, they are also rife with a sophisticated poignancy. Already having hit our virtual desk, TerraTara has been featured on The Other Side Reviews, but she is also receiving praise from Sinusoidal Music, Indie Dock Music Blog, Info Music, Mickey’s Weekly, and TJPL News – a sign of captivating audiences across the globe. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Empty Apartment’.

Following her well-received single ‘A Love, Tantalize’, TerraTara adopts an obscure folk-influenced sound in ‘Empty Apartment’. With a mild vocal reminiscence to Carole King and Alanis Morrissette, this multi-instrumentalist brings a toe-tapping attitude to the masses. The intimacy of old-school folk combines elegantly with a contemporary rock-reggae design. Interestingly enough, while ‘Empty Apartment’ is a sophisticated, brash single, a sense of whimsy is woven through the arrangement.

Initially recorded in 1999 by Kyra Soko, ‘Empty Apartment’ is a song with over two decades behind it. The thing is, while it was recorded in the 1990s, it was not released until this year with TerraTara re-mastering the song – and this is what we are listening to. A contemporary folk edginess does exist in TerraTara’s music, but a vintage veil lies atop her singles bringing a nostalgic retro vibe.

While the melody can hold its own with its eclectic presentation, the intimacy behind the tune turns my head. On the surface, a laidback, fun and upbeat song, but the vulnerability and fragility lying underneath are far more powerful. TerraTara explains that ‘Empty Apartment’ is about “being all alone, feeling empty, being broke and busking on the streets…and no matter where you go, they’re all the same…all the days feel the same.” Sincere, sentimental and introspective, there is a brutal honesty lurking in this insatiable new single.
