CJ Jarratt – My Darlin’ (2022)

With only two songs to his name, UK-based CJ Jarratt is hardly a blip on the massive sonic radar; however, despite only having two songs under his belt, the singer-songwriter is making waves in the industry. Featured on RGM, The Sounds Won’t Stop, BBC Radio, and various playlists, Jarratt is quickly building a fanbase. Inspired by contemporary and old-school pop music, there is an optimistic sensibility to his songs. Yet, while there is brightness, his songs are also thought-provoking and profound. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘My Darlin’.

In his interview with RGM, Jarratt noted that he tries to “connect with as many people as possible…” using his music. ‘My Darlin’ is not only connecting with listeners on an intimate level but also exposes human vulnerability in a delicate, relatable way. Penned as a tribute to a family member who passed away, the song was not meant to be released as a single – it was merely a song to be played at and before her funeral. The thing is, after seeing the emotional effect it sparked from family and at live performances, Jarratt chose to release it “in honour of her, one year on.”

“The song is about loss. About feeling hopeless at the loss of the person who you rely on the most. However, as the song goes on you hear the acceptance of this loss, as well as a love that will be forever shared.” – CJ Jarratt on ‘My Darlin’

Unlike the pop-rock meets indie-rock style of ‘Live Or Die’, ‘My Darlin’ is an acoustic gem of a tune. Interestingly enough, while the song has a heavy theme expressed through a simplistic arrangement, the basic piano and vocal execution is almost kaleidoscopic. A charming ballad to touch your heart and send your soul soaring, Jarratt showcases how a minimalist melody can be more moving than any “bells and whistles”.

Sincere, sentimental, heart-breaking and breath-taking, CJ Jarratt intoxicates listeners with his tune ‘My Darlin’.
