Track of the Day: J. Matthews – Courage For Fools

Using genres as a more experimental guide than a definitive design, singer-songwriter J. Matthews has a shy and poetic style but with bold, rich and full-bodied sounds. Hailing from Connecticut, the US-based pop artist explores emotions, life and love in a captivating rhapsody. With only two songs to his name (according to Spotify), J. Matthews is a minnow among sonic sharks, but he is already winning hearts across the globe. Features on Find No Enemy and Popmuzik prove he is reaching far beyond his North American borders. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Courage For Fools’.

Following his well-received debut track ‘Wanderlust’, J. Matthews nods to the sound of the 90s in ‘Courage For Fools’. A melding of pop-rock with contemporary pop undertones, ‘Courage For Fools’ could be considered a melding of Good Charlotte with later Justin Bieber and Charlie Puth. Interestingly enough, while there is a light, laidback tone to the jovial tune, the lyrics are more profound than a simple “feel-good banger”. It is this that highlights the depth and innovation of this new artist.

In a rough, rugged, but also warm way, J. Matthews connects with audiences on an intimate level. The song ‘Courage For Fools’ holds a passionate, thought-provoking message in a coming-of-age sonic package – it’s all about the frustration and fear of being in love. J. Matthews explains that ‘Courage For Fools’ is about a young man’s struggle to be honest with his feelings for a girl he knows feels the same way – “Neither of them wants to make the first move and risk the possibility of their feelings being false. He’s getting closer to letting the truth out, but only with the help of ‘liquid courage’…if you can’t find a way to say it to someone, sing it and let them listen.”
