Into The Outside Box – Turn It Around (2022)

The brainchild of US-based singer-songwriter Claudette Visco, Into The Outside Box is “…an unsettling enticing blend of jazz-flavoured Latin beats in total harmonic oblivion…the dream within the dream that you’ve been having for a really long time, only you just found out tomorrow.” Embracing music at a young age, Visco is a classically trained pianist and vocalist; however, her influences move far from Bach and Beethoven to jazz artists like Dinah Washington and funk-rock bands like Earth, Wind and Fire. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Turn It Around’.

Visco shares that her music is “…too new to be old and too old to be new…”, but if you’re into finding something retro but contemporary, fresh but familiar, and bold but soft, then you’re in for a treat with Into The Outside Box. Her first release in two years, ‘Turn It Around’ is a smooth piano-led package of jazzy vibes. Following the obscure ballad ‘The Man’ (released in 2020), Visco presents a different type of obscurity in ‘Turn It Around’. Perhaps an evolution in her sound reflects the unsettling experiences we have all had to deal with during the pandemic.

What I really enjoy about ‘Turn It Around’ is how simplistic it is while retaining a strong kaleidoscopic soundscape. Short, basic and brash lyricism flows elegantly into the groovy piano and drums arrangement creating something toe-tapping and chilled but also profound and complex. Reminiscent of Sade and Amy Winehouse with her no-nonsense attitude, there is a robust charm about Into The Outside Box that is difficult to forget or imitate.
