PleasePrettyLea – Chaotic (2022)

Known for her theatrical avant-garde alternative pop meets gothic hip-hop, singer-songwriter PleasePrettyLea is something out of this world. When I first came across Amanda Palmer from The Dresden Dolls, I was blown away by her obscurity and uniqueness; PleasePrettyLea beats Palmer hands down. Described by Listen with Monger as “one of the UK’s most overlooked and underrated artists” on the music scene, many people still need to hear her; however, she is also building a cult following across the globe with coverage from A&R Factory, Rock Era Magazine, The Punk Head, Less Than 1000 Followers, and The Everyday Magazine. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Chaotic’.

From themes like longing to see someone, intoxicated sensuality, and suicidal intent, PleasePrettyLea is not afraid to take a controversial stance in her music. ‘Chaotic’ details the emotional experience of dealing with betrayal by a close friend. Recorded with Zaq Sawyer Coffey, ‘Chaotic’ expresses inner turmoil and desperation through crashing, fragmented arrangements. Interestingly enough, while there is a frenzied and “all over the place” sound to the track, it retains an underlying soothing sincerity and flow.

Following her single ‘Burden’, ‘Chaotic’ is grittier, harsher and more intriguing. Perfectly textured, PleasePrettyLea sends you into a sonic hurricane tossed about from pillar to post. While I am accustomed to her eclectic sound, ‘Chaotic’ takes her gothic, experimental and obscure music to another level. Pain, conflict, angst, anger and frustration are all thrown together with a strong leaning toward hip-hop. The thing is, while the song might fall into a hip-hop/rap rock genre, PleasePrettyLea’s intoxicating confusion is completely undefinable and inimitable.

Elegantly capturing all the emotions of being betrayed, ‘Chaotic’ is madness placed into a pretty four-minute package. A slap in the face, punch in the gut and bouncing about your brain, ‘Chaotic’ is PleasePrettyLea’s acid trip without the acid.
