Track of the Day: DAVA – Back To Myself

When translating the word ‘dava’ from Hindi to English, we have the word ‘medicine’ – something so apt when speaking about the artist DAVA that it is more than just a pleasant discovery. Inspired by spirituality, consciousness, nature and raw human emotion, singer-songwriter Václav Polanský refers to his musical project as “an intention to help and inspire others by sharing my authentic experience”. After releasing his well-received debut album in March 2021, the Czech musician continues to explore the cathartic release of music with numerous singles, including his latest track ‘Back To Myself’.

This is my introduction to DAVA, but he has already been receiving critical acclaim from blogs like Zone Nights, Less Than 1000 Followers, Jammerzine and various playlists. In ‘Back To Myself’, DAVA brings a unique, eclectic type of folk to the masses. Tinged with an old-school folk sound, there is an intimacy reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac and James Taylor; however, a modern edge exists in the indie-folk style reaching out to more contemporary audiences.

Difficult to describe (although I try my best), ‘Back To Myself’ is a song that sends your soul soaring as soon as it begins. An acoustic-inspired arrangement enhances the intimacy of the single, but it is the soothing nature of DAVA’s vocals that adds that sense of calm and openness. DAVA explains that “our true liberation lies on the other side of our emotional pain. It is not possible to avoid it or to walk away from it. The only way is to head straight for it, embrace it fully and walk through with an open heart. I wrote ‘Back To Myself’ to remind us that we are in this all together.”

Recorded with British producer Ben Wilson, DAVA holds your hand and makes you feel safe, secure and hopeful with his new single ‘Back To Myself’.
