Track of the Day: Signal Static – Objects of Affection

Returning from a two-year hiatus, Canadian punk rock trio Signal Static is releasing a brand-new single ‘Objects of Affection’. Emphasising brutal honesty, openness and humanity in their music, Signal Static is a unique listening experience not easily forgotten. Receiving critical acclaim from notable blogs like Less Than 1000 Followers, Rock Era Magazine, Pete’s Rock News and Views, RGM and Volatile Weekly (among others), the lads are reaching an international audience. Come with us as we delve into their intriguing music.

In an interview with RGM, Ryan Stringer (vocals and bass) shared that one of the central themes in Signal Static’s songs “is the notion of looking for truth and meaning amidst all of the noise that we’re all exposed to constantly. Finding the signal in the static, so to speak” – ‘Objects of Affection’ takes on this theme in a provocative way. Touching on issues of abusive and toxic relationships, Stringer, Gino Klein (guitar) and Randy Camponi (drums) call out the “predators for what they are and unite behind survivors to send a pointed message that needs to be heard and understood.”

Inspired by artists like Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Pendulum and Chevelle, a combination of hard rock, punk and melodic metal are laced with introspective lyricism in ‘Objects of Affection’. Powerful, hard-hitting and a bit “in your face”, Signal Static express the anger and frustration of survivors in the aggressive melody. Pounding drums meld with dynamic guitars and Stringer’s gruff vocals create an almost palpable grittiness in the provocative single.

Interestingly enough, while ‘Objects of Affection’ is a gritty, forceful song, there is sincerity and sentimentality underlying the melody. Signal Static find the balance between fierce and sublime in the new track.
