Micki XO – Fake Gold (2022)

Described by notable blogs as “breath-taking” (Music Arena GH) and having an “alluring musicality” (Sinusoidal Music), singer-songwriter Micki XO is turning not only our heads but the heads of critics across the globe. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, this American musician aims to connect with listeners on a deeper, more intimate level while retaining a joviality to her sound. The latest addition to her repertoire is the single ‘Fake Gold’.

Using music as a catharsis to deal with unhealthy attitudes, Micki XO embraces us speaking about issues like mental health, inner conflict, toxic relationships and a lack of self-worth. Speaking from a personal level, the narrative of her songs are intensely intimate connecting with audiences. Interestingly enough, while the synth-inspired dream-pop sound conveys a strong sense of vulnerability, there is a subtle joviality in ‘Fake Gold’. The melody is arranged in such a way that you feel fragility, but also experience a sense of empowerment.

Following her single ‘Light Me Up’, Micki XO retains her commercial pop style; however, ‘Fake Gold’ is a better representation of the burden we feel when struggles overwhelm us. Micki XO explains the inspiration behind the title comes from her “desperation to appear normal on the outside but battling her demons on the inside…” So, while ‘Light Me Up’ focused on unhealthy coping mechanisms for addiction, ‘Fake Gold’ takes a deeper, more sensitive reflection of human essence and delicacy.

Soft, soothing and flowing, the new single can ease your soul and make you lie back to take account of things. It sends you twirling about in a kaleidoscopic sonic swirl but is also an anchor in the delicate soundscape. Her aim is to connect with listeners and ‘Fake Gold’ is Micki XO embracing audiences with a warm, comforting hug.
